Stories of famous originals, copies and forgeries “Despite the signature, the item is genuine!” – the well‑known collector’s joke. But what if behind this joke lies one of the most thrilling intrigues in the art world? Imagine: a famous masterpiece worth millions, its authorship undisputed, experts unanimous, museums proud of the acquisition. And then it turns out the artist is not who everyone thought, or we are looking at a skillful copy that has been considered an original for decades! How can you tell an original from a fake? Can the world’s top experts be fooled? And what really makes a work of art priceless? In the lecture, art historian Ksenia Remizova will tell astonishing stories of famous works, reveal authorship mysteries, introduce us to famous artistic hoaxes and incredibly talented forgers. We will learn how experts establish authenticity, how to spot details that betray the hand of the maker, and get acquainted with attribution methods – from connoisseurship to decoding hidden symbols and narratives. Most importantly, we will try to answer the question: what makes an original an original – the artist’s hand, the work’s history, the expert’s verdict, or our belief in its authenticity? Ksenia Remizova – art historian, avant‑garde researcher, exhibition curator, lecturer, author of the children’s book “The ‘Avant‑garde’ Train Races” (2021, Russian and English; re‑edition 2024).
