Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 7
Austrian composer Erich Korngold emigrated to the United States after Hitler annexed his native Germany. In America Korngold earned his living writing film music, for which he was awarded, among other things, two Oscars. For his violin concerto Korngold borrowed material from the music he composed for Hollywood. The soloist in Korngold’s concerto is Augustin Hadelich, known for his passionate and soulful interpretations as well as his technical virtuosity.
The Seventh Symphony marked a breakthrough for the 60‑year‑old Anton Bruckner as a symphonist. The work begins with a theme for cellos and a horn, which Bruckner received in a dream, whistled by a conductor friend, with the words: “With this theme you will make a fortune.”
