Colors flash like the aurora in Sibelius’s first symphony. This stormy masterpiece is a Finnish classic that RSO and Nicholas Collon have no special excuse to perform. Lotta Wennäkoski’s colour world is unique: Verdigris is a personal tribute to Sibelius. Britten’s youthful concerto, on the other hand, is a silky play of light and shadow, especially when performed by Steven Osborne, one of the work’s most prominent interpreters.
